Anodize

Description

Anodizing is a metal finishing process used to give aluminum a stronger surface which is very hard and exceptionally wear-resistant.  This is done by covering the surface of the part both with a penetration and a build-up of aluminum oxide. Unlike paint, which can flake off if not applied properly, anodized finishes are actually formed from the original material. The aluminum can also be dyed at the end of the anodizing process to get a cosmetic, colored finish.
